Try New Adventures Thursday: The Old-Folks Home

Living in a new town, with my husband gone from the house studying for an average of 12 hours a day, it's easy to start feeling cooped up in the house.

So my adventure for this Try New Adventures Thursday was to get out of the house and find someone that feels more cooped up than me

I packed Squishy in the car and we went to visit the nursing home that is just minutes from our house. This was not your "every-amenity-available" and "we-take-the-residents-to-Publix-every-Tuesday" sort of place. It was the kind where the halls are clogged with folks sitting in wheelchairs, and you can hear the occasional yell from a distant room.

I didn't know anybody there and didn't have much of a gameplan, but I was armed--with a baby. Instant way into people's hearts. He was quickly the center of attention and had lots of little old ladies and tough old men smiling.

We had fun, and I'm sure we'll be visiting again.

I was reminded of several things:

You don't have to go far to find someone that needs to be loved.

I want to take care of my parents in their old age and hope my children feel the same about me!

Each one of those dear old folks has a story and I wonder what it is...

  1. What you did was simply beautiful. I started my nursing career in a nursing home. This was such a wonderful experience for your children.

  2. What a wonderful idea! My little guy is 9 months and this sounds like a really fun outing for the 2 of us (my husband also is at school during the day). Love your blog!

  3. What a wonderful way to give and receive blessings. I think we have much we can learn from older generations. I'm looking forward to visiting my grandparents next week; I love hearing their stories.

  4. What a great idea. :) I did link up my sour cream adventure, with a picture even! Now, after all that work, I wish I could see the picture on your linky. Hehe. Happy Thursday!

  5. How impressive that you actually took the time to do this...and not for someone you know/love. I know you blessed their lives in a big way. I visit my grandmother every once in a while and she's in a pretty nice independent living facility...nothing like where you went. But I know she could move at any time. Their eyes always light up to have visitors and it saddens me that I don't go more often. Thank you for investing in the lives of others.

  7. I should do this more myself. Ever since working in nursing homes I've always tried to be the first to volunteer for those trips since it seems there are so many people who are uncomfortable with the elderly. Since I'm not, I really should step up. A baby is an excellent accessory for such an outing!
