The 30 Day Shred, Week 2

Just about to start day 10...
I'm still on the bandwagon....

But it's kicking my tail!

As of yesterday, I've completed 10 days of Jillian Michael's Shred! I'm proud of myself for sticking with it, and overall I'm feeling great.

On day 8, I moved on to Level 2. Not because Level 1 had gotten easy (although it had become more bearable), but because I was just wanting to make things more interesting. I think I've gotten more than I bargained for, because Level 2 has made me sore all over again.

A Few More Discoveries:
  • My mornings are more structured now that I am determined to fit in a workout.
  • I have to be really careful with Squishy underfoot. I'm sad to say that he has crawled right into a jumping jack and gotten clobbered more than once. :(
  • Working out creates more dirty laundry! Hm. More dirty laundry vs. being more healthy. I guess healthy wins.
  • I'm contemplating what to do after I'm done with the 30 days. I'm thinking about trying to run a 5k, something I've never done!
Question for anyone else who has ever done Level 2 of the 30 Day Shred: How the heck do I do those pendulum lunge things? I can do the forward lunge, but the backward one is so awkward for me! Tips? Today I gave it up and did the lunge and bicep curl from Level 1 instead.

I don't have any "in progress" workout pictures for you all, because I haven't figured out how to use the timer on my camera. Lame, I know. Also, I have no idea if I've lost any weight, because I don't own a scale! I'm really not concerned about the numbers per se--my goal is to fit back into my pre-baby clothes. Or at least get close.

Company girls, please excuse the stacks of paper on my computer table. Rachel Anne, I need a small thing intervention! That stack never goes away! It seems to re-create itself every 5 minutes.

Again, thanks to Crystal, Jen, and all the others who are doing the Shred right now. All the encouragement helps me keep going.

P.S. If you've ever run a 5k before, how did you train for it?

  1. You are doing great! My aerobic instructor has told me before that some people (like me) just can't get the backward lunges down. She just said to do forward, since the idea is to keep moving and keep your heart rate up.

How far can you run now? Search Google for couch to 5k. My friends and I ran a 5k last fall and several of them did that method and enjoyed it. That's a really exciting goal to have! I'm running a 10k in a few weeks and then a 7 mile race in November. I love running. :)

  2. Hey Alicia-good for you for doing the shred. My best friend is doing it and it is HARD. I am a runner, and it is REALLY easy to train for. It's great when you have babies too b/c if you have a jogging stroller, it provides GREAT strength training. Definitely follow the couch potato program, IT WORKS. But here's my advice--give yourself TIME, and you must be consistent with your schedule. if you are only goign to run once or twice here and there, it's not really goign to work. You will also experience aches and pains the first couple of weeks--I always thought I couldn't run because I have bad knees, but since I have become a runner, my knees and ankles are GREAT. So even if you are super achey and just don't want to do it--still do it. I did and lost 15 pounds of baby weight. (in 3 mos) :) Good luck!

  3. You are such an inspiration! I'm glad I'm not doing this alone. I've done two 5K's and loved them. We have another one scheduled for November 13. Like the other two comments said, the Couch Potato to 5K program is the best. I did that for the first one and it was perfect. Although, honestly, my treadmill died 4 weeks in and I did most of the training outside running around my house like a crazy person. Glad I live in the woods! The most important thing about the 5K is endurance and I think the 30 Day Shred gives you plenty of that. Check active.com to see if there are any races coming up soon that you can participate in. You'll be more than ready to do it.

  4. Good for you. :) I hate it when I can't figure out an exercise, but usually after a week or so of trying, it finally clicks.

And thanks for inspiring me; I'm going to do MY workout now!!! :D

  6. Good job on the Shred...I have yet to make it through 30 days straight. I have been training for my first 5k. I used a program called c25k (couch potato to 5k) It is online and has been really easy to follow. Good luck with your workouts.

  8. It sounds like you're doing excellent! My church used a 12 week program to train for a 5k. It is possible to use the program by itself, or with a group. Over 100 people finished their first 5k this weekend! The vast majority of them had never run at all before, so it is great for beginners! It is called Run for God. I think it is similar to the couch potato to 5k program, but I've not seen that program, personally. Keep up the great work!

  9. Couch to 5k! Couch to 5k! I love it! It's a lot of fun! As you're ramping up your running intervals, the increases come fairly naturally and you'll surprise yourself with what you're able to handle. You start with only 60 seconds of running and work up to 30 minutes. You can find all the info at coolrunning.com. Look for a local track club to post local 5k events. If you have a jogging stroller, I'm sure you'll enjoy getting Squishy out in the beautiful autumn weather :)
