Bookin' It Update (and Top 10 On My To-Read List!)

Perspectives on the World Christian Movement: A ReaderThe Perspectives course that I am taking is making me want to read every book on missions/other cultures that I can get my hands on. Every week, the speaker is an experienced, world-traveled, sweet follower of Jesus, and every time they mention a book title, I'm jotting it down.

I'm currently reading a thin book I found on our bookshelf titled "A Muslim's Heart."  Most of my life, I have not had any close Muslim friends. I've known some basics about Islam, but that's about it. When we ate with our Muslim neighbors last week as they broke their daily fast, I realized how very little I know about their culture and ideas. I want to invite our Muslim neighbors into our lives without constantly assaulting them with cultural roadblocks, so this book has been helpful to me.

The Heavenly Man: The Remarkable True Story of Chinese Christian Brother YunRight now, here are the Top 10 Books I Want to Read Soon:

1) Peace Child by Don Richardson.

2) Imprisoned In Iran by Dan Baumann

3) Epicenter by Joel Rosenberg

4) The Heavenly Man by Brother Yun and Paul Hattaway.

Tea with Hezbollah: Sitting at the Enemies Table Our Journey Through the Middle East5) Tea With Hezbollah by Ted Dekker and Carl Medearis

6) Muslims, Christians, and Jesus by Carl Medearis
Desolation Island (Vol. Book 5) (Aubrey/Maturin Novels)
7) Radical by David Platt

8) The Barbarian Way by Erwin McManus

9) Desolation Island by Patrick O'Brian (#5 in the Aubrey/Maturin series--had to throw some fiction in here!)

10) Something just for fun...do you have any suggestions?

Since I haven't yet read any of the books on my list, I cannot (with the exception of "Peace Child") recommend them wholeheartedly...yet! Have you read any of these books? Thoughts?

I'm linked up to Top Ten Tuesday and Bookin' It. :D

  1. Hi Alicia. I really enjoy your blog and read it every day. I wanted to let you know that marla taviano at marlataviano.com is having a Radical read-along that is starting today. I am reading the book and it is rocking my world!

Anyway I am also a huge fan of all of your recipes, menu-plans, and checking out what you are doing on Thursdays.

  5. I haven't read any of those books, but they sound really great. I had a friend recently recommend Safely Home by Randy Alcorn. It's about the underground church in China.

I think it's really great that you are wanting to reach out to your neighbors in this way! One of my best friends from college is Muslim, and it has been amazing getting to better understand Islam and her culture/faith over the years.

  6. If you're looking for books about Islam, one that we recently picked up after hearing Dr. Geisler speak was "Answering Islam: The Crescent in Light of the Cross" by Abdul Saleeb and Norman L. Geisler. We haven't read it yet, but it's on our list and on our shelf. If you're looking for a book to read for fun, I would highly recommend "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.

  7. I haven't read the book, but we saw a video based on Epicenter at church over the summer during a study on endtimes. It is very interesting. The video has interviews in it with the author and many other political leaders, and even Muslims who have converted, discussing the signs of the end times, and historical events that they believe are playing part in leading up to it. It really is a heavy load of information for a 2 hr movie! I think the book is just more of the same, very good!
As for books to read for fun, I love Nicholas Sparks books! I fly through them, and he has a new one out right now, though I will wait for it in paperback!

  14. I recently read Tea with Hezbollah. There's lots of food for thought there. My parents taught the Perspectives course at the mission center in their town years ago. I'm glad to see it's still around. Your list looks like a great one.
