It's ridiculously easy to make. Pictured is my (mostly empty) jar of homemade syrup. Here's how you can make it yourself:
Homemade Pancake Syrup
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
1 cup water
1/2 tsp. maple flavoring
1/2 tsp. vanilla flavoring
Combine sugars and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil on high heat. Once boiling, stir for 2 minutes as it continues to boil. After 2 minutes, remove from heat and add flavorings. Yields 2 cups syrup.
And you're done! No more high fructose corn syrup for you. Now I'm not saying the homemade version is healthy or anything, but still...it's nice to know what's in your food--even if it is pure sugar!

:) there's nothing wrong with pure sugar as long as you don't eat too much. At least that's what I keep telling myself.
ReplyDeleteHow cool is that to make your own syrup! :D THanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI've made this before and its delicious. Sometimes I will use raw sugar or throw in a cinnamon stick as well.
ReplyDeleteI'll try this someday! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteInteresting! "Pancake Saturday" is a tradition in our house - sometime I'll have to try this syrup to go with them!
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking about trying this. Thanks for posting a TNT recipe, saved me hours on searching!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get the maple flavoring? I have looked everywhere and can't find any in north georgia.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous: I actually found maple flavoring at a Super WalMart. I live in Florida.
ReplyDelete@Brenda: I love the idea of a cinnamon stick!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. Thanks. Thanks for the reminder! I would love for you to join me for this week's edition of What's On the Menu Wednesday. Mister Linky is up and ready for you.
ReplyDeleteI am following you from Tasty Tuesday. I never thought of making my own syrup. That is such a simple recipe. Come on over to my blog and check out how my ingredients are growing. Have a blessed week!

My mom always made homemade syrup for us when I was growing up. I still like it better than the stuff you buy at the store. :-)
ReplyDeleteI posted a step-by-step for Cinnamon Bun Pancakes on my site today and it uses icing instead of syrup. Homemade of course!

Where do you store it after you make it and how long will it keep?
ReplyDeleteCan you tell me how long it will keep in the fridge
ReplyDeleteCan you can it and process like you do jelly?
Thnaks for any help you can give me
Jessica and Pat: I store the syrup in the fridge after I make it. It will keep for a long time...after awhile it may start to crystalize some, but the part that isn't crystalized is still good to eat!
ReplyDeletePat, I'm not sure about canning it!
Can you substitute agave syrup for the sugar?
ReplyDeleteI've never tried that, but it could be worth a shot!
DeleteThis is the best recipe. I was thinking of adding butter flavoring to my next batch. Will let you know how it tastes.
