Try New Adventures Thursday: "Now Every Time I Go For The Mailbox..."

Honest-to-goodness, old-fashioned letters....I love them.

My sister Michaela moved to California recently, and we've decided to take on snail mail communication (with the occasional twitter conversation and phone call thrown in, of course).

I like to write in cursive (it's old-fashioned), but my sister says mine is "pretty" but basically unreadable. Guess I need to work on that.

My other new letter-writing adventure is to 5-year-old Immaculate, who put me to shame when I opened my mailbox to a letter from her before I had penned her a word!

Two years ago, I spent time everyday writing to my deployed husband. Hundreds of mushy-gushy precious letters passed between us. One of our theme songs was Walking On Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves because of the line "Now every time I go for the mailbox, gotta hold myself down..."

We had emails and phone calls (thank God!), but there was something irreplaceable about holding an actual letter in your hand. That tangible link to my husband meant so much.

Do you keep in touch with anyone via paper and pen?

  2. I love writing letters, but no one does snail mail anymore, except me. =( When our kids grow up a little more, we should make them become pen pals or something. haha What a precious letter you received.

  4. When my husband was gone the first time (12 yrs ago), it was (gasp) before anyone really had computers or email. We wrote letters and sent cards to each other and I still have them - tied with a ribbon, tucked away.

When he was gone again, three years ago - cell phones, email and webcams were very much a part of our reality and we didn't write a single letter to one another.

Looking back - I prefer the time we were forced to write letters :)

  6. @Joyce: I had penpals as a little girl and it was SO. MUCH. FUN. I'm totally game for that!

@Shell, I know what you mean! We made a pact to also write letters even though we also had the other forms of communication...it helped for the lonely moments when phone/email was not available.
