Bookin' It Update

This has been a funny reading season for me. I have a huge, ever growing reading list and seemingly shrinking time. I need to be more diligent about setting aside time to read. My favorite time is 30 minutes before it's time to sleep, reading curled up in my bed.

The Golden Key (Dodo Press)The only book I completed start to finish this month was The Golden Key by George MacDonald.  One evening this month I was feeling overwhelmed and overworked, and my sweet hubby whisked the baby off and they went on a "boys trip" to the store, giving me 45 minutes just to myself to sit and read on the couch with a cup of coffee. It was divine, and that's when I picked up this book.

It's about a boy named Mossy who finds the golden key at the end of the rainbow. He and his companion, Tangle, journey to find the keyhole. To do this book justice, I need to re-read it (which would not take long) to "get" more of what MacDonald is trying to say through the story. However, I love his descriptions of each colorful character, especially the ones who are both very old and very young at the same time.

Perspectives on the World Christian Movement: A ReaderMy other reading has consisted of essays out of my Perspectives Reader--the last few have been about the history of missions and have included the writings of Hudson Taylor, William Carey, and Ralph Winter. So good!!!

I'd love to hear about what you've been reading lately, and also how you fit that reading into your day.

I'm linked up to Bookin' It over at Life As Mom.

  1. Since I am a graduate student as well as a mom, I don't have a lot of time for choosing books to read, but since I am working on my PhD in literature, I am lucky that I like the books that I have to read. Some of my favorites this semester were "Frankenstein," "Wuthering Heights," and "Bleak House."

  2. I haven't been reading much lately. I feel like you do, not much time in my ever-increasingly busy life. My Momma always says people find time for things they love to do. She's right...I'd rather be cooking and baking and blogging. :)

  3. This is a fun topic! I love to read. Right now, my devotions are my main reading, but on the weekends, I read more for pleasure. Devos: Stepping Up: A Journey through the Psalms of Ascent by Beth Moore, Desiring God by John Piper, Elijah: A Man of Fire and Rain (I think that's teh full title) by Ray Pritchard, and Thin Within: A Grace-Oriented Approach to Weight Loss by Dr. Arthur and Judy Halliday (I think.) For fun, I'm reading Beverly Lewis's 2nd book in the Daughters of Abram series, and a men's devotional to review for Thomas Nelson on my blog. On my "to read next" list are Phillipa Gregory's newest, along with Eat Pray Love (if I like it) and the rest of the Beverly Lewis series I started. Good thing I don't have kiddos yet, or I'd never finish any of these!!!! LOL

  4. Kelly, I haven't read any of those three books, but want to read all of them!!

Candi, I suppose that's true! I think my problem is that I like TOO MANY things. ;)

Wow, look at you go, Snowflakes! It is true that having a kiddo has seemed to interrupt my reading habits...although I could say the same for having a blog! I just need to make it a priority. :) Thanks for sharing everything you're reading.

  5. I have wanted to read George MacDonald, since he's so often quoted by C.S. Lewis, so now I think I'll request that one at the library for my next book. Thanks for the recommendation!

I just finished Kevin Roose's Unlikely Disciple. It's a good read, particularly if you notice a culture clash between Christian and non in your life.

I've been slowly (ever so slowly) going through Andrew Murray's "With Christ in the School of Prayer" most mornings. I've had it for years and have never read it. I don't know why, it's so good!

  6. Cindy, my hubby and I were just talking the other day about how we have the HARDEST time getting through books about prayer! I think mainly because they make me want to drop everything and pray...which means I never get through the book. Silly.

If you've never read MacDonald, I would start with "The Princess and The Goblin"...it's my favorite of his. :D

  7. I am a total bookworm. I want to read all the books in the world but that is not possible. =( I can try though. =p You should get a shalfari site going if you don't have that already. I just got The Grace of God by Andy Stanley from Booksneeze and on the way is Outlive Your Life by Max Lucado.

  8. I love to read. Lately the reading has been sci-fi/fantasy. The last thing I read was the Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks. I really enjoyed the books.
It's hard to make the time with a 14 month old. Something usually suffers when I pick up a new book and it's usually my blog. I can't justify taking time out from anything else. Reading is part of the reason I took so much time off from my blog after we got back from vacation.

I read when baby naps and when she sleeps. It usually means I'm up waaaay late and pay for it the next day.

  10. Until two weeks ago, it had been a very long time since I've finished a book. I started many this summer when we were in Canada (with minimal internet access), but have trouble incorporating them into daily life at home. The book I finished recently was read in one evening. I just ignored the dirty dishes and kept reading until I finished the book. But I can't really make that a habit =).

What I would like to do is read while I am outside watching my children play in our yard or at the park. Hopefully I can manage to try it a few times before the impending cold weather hits!
