Pre-Thanksgiving

This year we are participating in not one, not two, but three thanksgiving dinners. One with our neighbors, one with our church, and one with our family. How awesome is that?

And better yet, I am not hosting any of the dinners, which makes my Thanksgiving prep relatively easy--bring a dish or two to each dinner!

Our family will spend Thanksgiving Day at my parents with all the family gathered, plus fiances and at least one other young family from our church. We will relax, pass the babies around, talk of upcoming weddings, and devour incredible amounts of food. I look forward to spending time in the kitchen with my mom on Thanksgiving Day.  



We will inevitably be making:


Sweet Potato Casserole--my childhood favorite! Thanksgiving and Christmas are never without this dish. Also, on holidays the lovely orange 'taters receive the addition of a fabulous sweet/nutty topping (recipe coming soon).

Spinach Souffle--A must have. It's a spinach dish that everyone loves (can't go wrong there!).








Also, this year I'm branching out to try a few *new* Thanksgiving dishes, including:

Pumpkin Dinner Rolls

Depression-Era Pumpkin Pie (Recipe coming soon! It's to die for.)

Pioneer Woman's Pecan Pie

What are the staple Thanksgiving recipes served at your family get-togethers each year?

All this talk of Thanksgiving is making me hungry, which leads me to our menu plan for this week (Thurs and Fri are sure to be my favorite!):

Breakfasts: Homemade Yogurt (just made this for the 1st time with whole milk...sooo good!), cold cereal, granola, smoothies, cream of wheat
Lunches: leftovers, salads

Dinners:
Monday--Spaghetti with Garlic Bread and Salad
Tuesday--Chicken with Olives (a new PW recipe for this week...one I've been wanting to try for some time!)
Thursday--Thanksgiving Dinner with our home group and international students
Friday--Thanksgiving Dinner with our apartment village
Saturday--Pizza Night

We are conducting a dinner-time experiment over the next few days--I'll share it with you on Try New Adventures Thursday!

  1. Your menu looks so yummy! I hope to get around to planning our menu for this week today. For. Real. More than just looking at "make menu plan" on the "to do" list :P

    Doesn't Pioneer Woman always make your mouth drool? I probably gain weight just looking at her blog :P

  2. We tried doing a sweet potato casserole last year. It was sooo good. We're definitely doing that again this year. Undecided if it's going to be at our house again or my parents'.

  5. Must haves are my mom's stuffing and mashed potatoes with cranberry relish. Mix, eat and enjoy! Also, last year, we had chess pie for the first time. It was so delicious I had it for breakfast the next morning! Haha! Not the healthiest but certainly the tasty breakfast. :)

  6. Sarah, my dad LOVES lemon chess pie, but we've only ever had it in Virginia (where my mom's parents live) because they sell it at Ukrops there. So my mission soon is to find a good lemon chess pie recipe.

    Can I have your mom's stuffing recipe? Most of the time (dare I say this?) I prefer Stouffers....

    I especially love the 30 day shred results, I just ordered it and hope to do the same!
    And by the way, PW Pecan Pie is to die for, I made it last Thanksgiving!!
