A Spring Container Garden! {Try New Adventures Thursday}

Parsley

Parsley is a champ.

In other words, it's the only plant still alive from my Fall container garden. Oh, and one scraggly looking mum. Everything did ok for awhile, but then I occasionally frequently forgot to water the plants and the weather turned really cold.

But it was so nice while it lasted! Fresh basil, cilantro, or parsley can really perk up a dish!

So I'm happy to report that our first ever Spring container garden is planted and busily growing. And I have watered it faithfully for 4 days now. I'm really on a roll, ya'll.

Spring Container Garden

We have 6 Roma tomato plants, 6 bell pepper plants, cilantro, oregano, parsley, and some zucchini (still waiting to sprout). Oh, and the scraggly mum. :) I'm planning on adding some basil again soon. Fresh pesto this summer would be divine.

I am very eager to see the fruit of our labor. Here's our little garden in it's entirety:

Squishy and I have added "Water the garden" into our morning routine, and it makes living in an apartment feel more homey.

Do pass on any gardening tips that you have--especially for very hot climates! Have you planted a garden this year or have a plan in the works?

It's Try New Adventures Thursday, so link on up, ya'll! Any big or little adventure will suit. :) Be sure to link back to Alicia's Homemaking and visit the other participants if you can! The twitter hashtag is #TryNewAdventures.

  1. I'm guessing the plants will stay in those containers for the season? Are you watering with any type of plant fertilizer? That would be what I'd recommend doing if you're not already. The potting soils usually have some fertilizer in it to start out, but that will likely get used up long before the plant is done growing and bearing. Fish Emulsion is a good natural fertilizer, and there's tons of other kinds out there, like Miracle Grow for specific kinds of plants (I know there's a Tomato one), among other stuff. You're plants look so big compared to my little tiny ones! Gardening is so much work AND fun! Makes me feel that much more "domestic" and "farmer-y" :)

  2. Yes, I'm hoping those pots will be big enough to get us through the season. :)
I am not currently watering with a fertilizer, so thanks for that tip!
Our plants are growing visibly every day, so that's so encouraging. :D Just trying to keep the squirrels away (they like to dig)!

  3. I'm thinking of starting a container garden once we are settled in the new house. The backyard is shaded {which is great for Texas heat}, so I just have the patio to work with. I started reading yesterday about how to start an herb container garden. Here's to some fresh herbs in my cooking!

  4. Your beautiful photos are inspiring me! I'm guessing I still have several weeks until it's warm enough here to get some plants going outside. I'll have to talk to my landlord to see if there's a place around the complex where he wouldn't mind me keeping a few potted plants. I would love to have cilantro and tomatoes all summer. I love fresh salsa!

  5. Oooh! Inspiration... If only there wasn't still 2ft of snow on the ground here and a temp of -18C.
We may have to create an indoor garden :)

  7. I can't wait to plant a few things soon!! We usually do squash and tomatoes, but we are looking to grow a few other things for this summer. I have no clue about gardening, so I'm no help, but most people I talk to swear by Miracle Gro. If it wasn't for my girls, I would not remember to water my plants outside. I'm thinking to get a few indoor plants...so I'll have to link up when I try that adventure. ;)

  8. Oh, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a problem remembering to water. The weather is still too cold for me to plant anything, but I am starting to think about what I'll plant this year!

  9. I think everyone has spring fever! We went to the store yesterday to pick up some seed packets to plant later on. I tried the container gardening last year and didn't water them. Yes I know! Dumb. But I learned that I prefer them in the ground. This is our 3rd year for a little garden. I'm so excited. This year we're going to plant a permanent herb garden and I'm anxious to get started. hey, that might be a great Try New Adventure post! :)

  10. When I started reading, I thought, "Man, she's starting her garden awfully early!" Then I realize that IA and FL are not exactly the same in terms of climate :) I'm like you and always (not just often) forget to water my plants. That's why I don't have any. And my dogs whine at me so I don't forget to feed and water them!
