The FIRST Try New Adventures Thursday

I have been plotting about what new adventure I could try for the first "Try New Adventures Thursday," and it was all planned out--my mission to win over the affection of all my neighbors by baking them these cookies!

That is, until I got sick....and thought twice about possibly spreading illness via food.

So I had to tone down the adventure a few notches.

Instead, I decided to put the lone can of garbanzo beans that has been sitting in my cabinet to use. I thought, "Is making hummus hard?"

Turns out, it's ridiculously easy.

And don't worry...I thought of my family and washed my hands a frequently and religiously. ;)

Here's how it turned out:

Want to try something new and make your own homemade hummus? It's super cheap, super easy, and super yummy (what more could you ask for?).

Ingredients:
1 can garbanzo beans (or two cups, if you cooked your own), with 1 1/2 tsp. liquid reserved
1 1/2 tsp. olive oil
1/2 tsp. ground cumin
2 TBSP lemon juice
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 of a fresh jalapeno pepper sliced (optional)
Dash of cayenne pepper (optional)

To make, toss it all in your food processor or blender and blend until smooth.

I took Jen's advice and we ate the hummus served on top of cucumber slices. Delicious!

What new things have you tried this week? Have you had any adventures? Link up and tell us about them. Or, tell us about it in the comments!

Here are the official Try New Adventures Thursday Rules:
1) Please link directly to our blog post and not to your blog's homepage.
2) Link back to Alicia's Homemaking in your blog post.
3) Like I said before, please no product reviews or tried-and-true recipes (we're trying *new* things)...but pretty much any small or big adventure will work. :)
4) If you so desire, feel free to add the graffic above or this button to your post.

If you're on twitter, you can tweet about your post using the hashtag #TryNewAdventures. I'll be visiting all of your posts and leaving comment love and retweeting on twitter.

  5. Such excellent photography with your recipes! My first attempt at hummus started with dry beans and the results were not that great. But you're inspiring me to try again. =)

  6. Adding sesame oil or tahini (sesame seed paste) is really yummy too. Sesame oil was on clearance at the commissary; yay!

  7. Ok, yes....tahini! I saw this called for in several other recipes and had no idea what it was.

Audrey, did you see that www.Southernsavers.com recently started doing a commissary list again?

  8. I like this version--most call for tahini, which can be expensive as well as hard to find in a small town. That's one of the reasons I never tried to make it--good to know that I can leave it out and still taste good!

  9. I love hummus, all the recipes I've found use tahini paste and sesame oil, so I will definitely try this!
