Try New Adventures Thursday: In Which I Try To Hit A Ball...

Sports are not my forte.

And that's really phrasing it quite gently. Everytime we go on a family beach vacation with my (also not very sport-savvy) family, I get hit in the head with a volleyball. Every. Time.

My husband, however, can surf, skateboard, ski, and snowboard. He's a natural athlete--footballs and soccer balls don't send him running into hiding.

Shortly after we were married, he taught me how to catch and throw a Frisbee. It was that bad, ya'll.

Despite my lack of talent and experience, I really do want to learn how to play some sports. Soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, Tennis, and Volleyball top my list, especially since they can be played with others at get-togethers, etc.

Soooooo....! My hubby and I got to go on a date last weekend, and he took me to a tennis court and gave me a lesson. Not a tennis lesson, really. Just a "let's try to hit the ball back and forth over the net" lesson. Andrew has learned over the years not to give me lots of technical stuff to learn at the get-go, because I get discouraged. He is a very patient (and sweet!) teacher.

My crowning achievement? A volley in which we hit the ball back and forth a total of four times. :) Obviously, this is going to take quite a few more dates to iron out. We really had a great time, and I'm happy to have *started* to learn!

What about you? Are you like me--all arms and legs and no coordination? What sport do you enjoy or which one would you like to learn?

  1. Oh yeah, I KNOW where you're coming from with the "hit in the head" thing. I've been hit in the head with enough stuff that ANYthing thrown in my direction sends my arms up like a shield. I can play volleyball (ha!)... but it takes me a while to get to where I'll run after the ball instead of run away from it. Yay for you for trying tennis! I think tennis looks like fun, but I've never tried it. Ping-pong is more my speed :) At least those balls won't hurt if they hit me!

  2. You are a brave woman. I am the same--balls fly at my head like it's a target or something. And my husband is WAY more coordinated than me too. I'm 4'10" so I'm not going to even pretend to be athletically coordinated. When you are this much of a munchkin, my goal is to not get mistaken for a child while at the park. ;)

  3. Jon and I did a sports date once. Let's just say, I'm glad it wasn't a first date! :) I do better with running or cycling, but not "sports". No hand eye coordination at all!

  4. I am the same way, ugh I even have trouble throwing a frisbee. I like volleyball and used to not be too terrible at it. But I was at a birthday party at the park this spring and some people were playing volleyball nearby (not from our party)--their ball landed by my feet and I tried to "serve" it back to them and it kind of tumbled off my arm in a lovely flop. Embarassing! We all had a good laugh at my ineptitude.

Great job trying tennis. It can be fun if you manage to keep the ball going back and forth, which I haven't been able to do in years! ;-)

  5. How fun? =p I used to play tennis all the time, but haven't in the longest time. Great idea for a date.

  6. Oh, it's so nice to know I'm not the only one! I've had many balls to the head, and the face, and the stomach. Most of those happened in elementary school. Now I've learned to just cover my head and scream in terror if I think one is coming near me. It helps the other team laugh, and my own team to hate the sight of me.

Unfortunately, my husband is as bad, if not worse, than me when it comes to sports. Our poor children.

  7. I used to play tennis in high school. I don't know if it's because it's been way too long or because of a bad knee now, but I can't play at all. We did it some on vacation about two years ago, and it was just pitiful.

  8. I am not that coordinated either, though I enjoy being active. In college, I signed up to take a volleyball class for credit because so many social events centered on playing volleyball, and I was really terrible. It was a short-lived improvement, as my husband can attest!
