Getting Ready For Christmas in October {Try New Adventures Thursday!}

I'm usually one of those last-minute Christmas people. In part, I think, because the weather in Florida takes so long to catch up with the cooler seasons. It doesn't feel like Christmas until the holiday is literally upon you. And then sometimes (like every 15 years) there will be snow flurries, and other times you're still in a t-shirt.

Mantel at my parent's last year...
The mantel at my parent's house last Christmas...:)

But enough excuses. This year at Christmastime, I might be in the hospital having a baby (I'm due on the 29th...1st baby was 3 days early). So I'm going to be a little occupied or I'm still going to be gigantically pregnant. Either way, not quite up to running around to gather last minute supplies/ingredients/gifts related to the holiday.

This will also be our first family Christmas at home, away from family (unless they come to us). A little sad, and a little exciting. If I haven't had the baby yet, I would like to have some sort of Christmas meal planned, although necessity may require it to be simple.

We like to keep our Christmas stress-free and minimalist in general. I love to give away baked goods, and we treasure our few family traditions. Our gifts to family and friends will be primarily homemade/handmade. And the budget is tight. All the more room for creativity and fun, right (if I'm not napping, that is)?

So, back to planning ahead. I printed some nifty Christmas planning sheets from Life...Your Way and am in the process of deciding which handmade gift to make for who, what supplies I need, what I want to cook (and can I freeze it ahead of time?), who to send Christmas cards to, what addresses I need, etc.

Shaa-zam! Somebody pinch me...this must be the pregnancy nesting urge kicking in. :D

Pinterest (are you pinning yet?) is my new Christmas search engine. Here are a few festive things I might try this year:

I love candles in the wintertime! They are particularly cheap at the Dollar Store.

A Salt dough ornament may work perfectly for our family ornament this year. :) Remember the handprint snowman ornaments we made last year?

I've been wanting to make peppermint bark for awhile now...sounds scrumptious.

Homemade hot cocoa mix sounds like a fun gift for the neighbors!

I would be very proud of myself if I managed to make a wreath that looked this cute.

In our 700 sq. ft. apartment, I have very little room for Christmas decorating. But these cute winter wonderland jars might find their way onto the coveted space on our one kitchen shelf...

Here's to a festive holiday season full of sweet memories, a huge stomach (because of the baby, ya'll, not the goodies), dear friends, and, of course, the proper amount of food. May there be lots of last minute spontaneity and very little last minute scrambling....

  1. Oh I feel your pain. I'm due December 19th, but tenatively scheduled for c-section December 12th. LOL We have finished little man's (he's 4) Christmas shopping and are on our way to finishing up everyone else. Our plan is to do Christmas decorating right at Thanksgiving because there's the possibility that this peanut will be early and if that's the case we dont' want little man to miss out. By the way, I have a slight Pinterest addiction. I could spend hours on there but try to limit it to once a day or every other day. Last year I helped little man make Christmas ornaments and we attached them to the grandparents gifts as part of their gift and kind of like a tag. They loved them. I plan to do something similar this year too.

  3. Love this post Alicia! Kurt and I have already been thinking about Christmas too...we even casually looked at little Christmas trees yesterday, haha. We also already bought lights which are strung on our windows now. It must be because the weather here is already getting Christmas-like (at least in my book). Plus we know it will also be our first Christmas away from family too. I love those pins! Thanks for sharing.

  4. I was due December 27 2 years ago and ended up having Judah on Christmas Eve and spent all of Christmas in the hospital!! The key is doing everything ahead of time, and letting everyone else take care of Christmas duties the day of, if you can help it! Our Christmas that year was crazy! Your Christmas craft ideas are so cute! That makes me anxious to figure out what we could start making/doing now to make the holidays less stressful, and expensive!!

  5. Love the ideas you shared, especially the cinnamon stick candles!

I'll be celebrating Christmas with a huge tummy as well. =) And I should work toward similar goals of having things in place ahead of time. Quite a challenge for this procrastinator!

  6. Love Life...Your Way, love that cocoa mix idea, love Pinterest! Christmas always sneaks up on me because I try to avoid getting started too early and getting "tired" of it after seeing "Christmas" for 2+ month....but then BAM! it's here. =p I think our Costco had Christmas decor for sale Labor Day!

  8. I dug out a candle last evening for the windowsill at my kitchen sink - I *love* having a candle there through the "winter" months! I am hoping to get a head-start on Christmas Cards (to be part of my weekly goals!) the beginning of Nov., and also seriously start Christmas shopping/planning. In the past I have always "thought" about it instead of actually being serious about it... but this year I'm determined to do it differently and actually have fun and enjoy it (I have fun and enjoy it anyway... mostly... but I want to keep the stress at bay).

  9. Alicia! Thanks for posting that wreath--I made it after seeing it the other day. I'll post a pic on my blog, but it'll be awhile because it's a gift for someone :-)
