12 Books For The New Year {Try New Adventures Thursday!}

Old Books

Last year I set a goal of reading 12 books--one per month. I fell a bit short of my goal (mainly due to pregnancy exhaustion), but I did read the following nine books...

Books I read in 2011:
  1. Shepherding a Child's Heart
  2. One Thousand Gifts (The best book I read. This is in my "read and reread" category.)
  3. The Digital Photography Book
  4. The Fortune of War
  5. The Surgeon's Mate
  6. The Help
  7. Loving The Little Years: Motherhood in the Trenches
  8. The Mission of Motherhood
  9. Kisses for Katie

I'd say it was a good year, especially since I enjoyed each of the books I read. This year, however, I really would like to hit the 12 book mark (or beyond!). I'm excited to be well on my way, since breastfeeding forces me to sit down for long periods of time during the day. When I'm not reading to my toddler, I'll pick up my own book (when I'm not drawn into Instagram, that is. *sheepish*).

Currently reading...#janphotoaday (day 14)

Here are the volumes I hope to read this year (a few are carried over from last year's list):

2012
  1. The Hidden Art of Homemaking by Edith Schaeffer (just finished this one!)
  2. Organized Simplicity by Tsh Oxenreider (I've started this one...)
  3. Surrender: The Key to Spiritual Success by Arthur Burt (started this one as well)
  4. The Great Omission by Steve Saint
  5. The Ionian Mission by Patrick O'Brian
  6. The Heavenly Man by Brother Yun and Paul Hattaway
  7. Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day
  8. Grace For The Good Girl by Emily Freeman
  9. Secrets of the Baby Whisperer by Tracy Hogg
  10. Peace Child by Don Richardson
  11. The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins
  12. Imprisoned in Iran by Dan Baumann

I'm excited that I'm already on track with my book reading for this year. The Hidden Art of Homemaking was a pleasure to read, once I acclimated to the author's style. The book is not a homemaking how-to, but focuses instead on giving you ideas for expressing creativity in your everyday activities. It encouraged me to be purposefully creative in my role as a wife, mom, and homemaker. It particularly made me want to keep fresh flowers in the house at all times. :)

Do you have any good reads planned for the coming year? I'd love to hear!

  1. I don't have any personal reading goals this year. I have made a goal with Julia to read certain chapter books with her. And for me, I've been using what is normal reading time, to start crocheting a blanket. I'm about 1/6 of the way done! :)

What chapter books are you reading with Julia?

  2. Is Peace Child a reread? I remember mom reading that to us. Really good!

    1. I think I was already out of the house/in college when she read that one out loud, because I've never read it/heard it, I'm pretty sure. It's been on my list for awhile..

    2. Oh ok, that's probably right because I was old enough to remember it pretty well. :-) I want to reread it though.

  3. I have been wanting to get Kisses for Katie, how was it? I am so far behind on my reading but I did enjoy The Help, and am looking forward to A Narnia re-read!
    Blessings!

    1. Katharine, I really enjoyed Kisses for Katie. Challenging. I would REALLY love to read a book by Katie Davis when she is in her 50s-60s....she will have a wealth of wisdom to share!

  4. What great lists! I don't have any goals this year and I'm not what I'd add but it sounds like a good idea because I've only read a few books since Archer was born. I'd definitely like to finish The Ministry of Motherhood which has been on my dresser for a long time.

  5. Linking up belatedly (is that a word?)...I linked up my 2012 book list because I didn't have much of an adventure this past week, unless you count recovery from sickness an adventure. I guess it could be. =p We had a few big adventures yesterday and today, but I haven't had time to blog about them yet, so you should look forward to a fun one that Melody will post next week.

  6. I posted my 2012 book list a couple of weeks ago: http://nicoleslifeafter20.blogspot.com/2012/01/my-2012-book-list.html I just finished "Grace for the Good Girl" and it is now one of my FAVORITES! (And on my re-read list!) You will not be disappointed!
